I learned a lesson from my friend, James Lecesne, yesterday. When marginalized people—particularly our LGBTQIA brothers and sisters—hear Christians talking about brokenness, they feel judged. It's a trigger word. It is like telling them that they are not enough. In this word, their personhood is fundamentally devalued. It is time to make a distinction between tourists and pilgrims. To the casual observer they may look alike, but they are not and they do not arrive at the same destination. It is time for the grandfather in me to stand up for Greta Thunberg as I did earlier for Emma Gonzalez. For those not attuned to the news, Greta Thunberg is a climate activist from Sweden who recently spoke at the United Nations. She is the 2019 Time Magazine Person of the Year. Emma Gonzalez is the anti-gun activist from Parkland’s Stoneman-Douglas High School, now a freshman at New College of Florida. Both are notable Gen Z representatives.
